Unity in Diversity: A Plea for Interfaith Understanding this Christmas
Have been seeing this updates over social media, thought i should pay a blind eye but I couldn’t. As someone who has always believed in tolerance and mutual respect, I am appalled by this statement advising Muslims not to accept gifts from Christians during Christmas.
Personally, I have always sought to break down barriers and challenge misconceptions. I have gotten gifts from some of my well respected Muslim friends while I also do the same too, visited mosques, with my friends, not to pray, but to show solidarity and dispel the myth that Christians shouldn't set foot in a mosque. Most times I post pictures of me in the mosque and I got some comments from people and In turn I just feel like they don’t know what they are saying. What they fail to understand was that these set of friends I accompany to the mosque are not religiously stupid.
I have never been one to argue about religion, as I believe it's a personal matter. However, I have grown increasingly disenchanted with organized religion due to its tendency to divide people. My faith in God remains unwavering, but I am disillusioned by the way religion is often used to sow discord and intolerance.
A cursory look at the statement in question. In a country like Nigeria, where diversity is our strength, such divisive rhetoric shouldn’t be emanating from us. Let’s just try and be promoting unity, love and being able accept each other’s religion not by spreading hate and intolerance. So I urge you all to discard, reject, oust and abolish this misguided ideology and embrace the values of kindness, compassion and generosity that transcend religious boundaries.
Thank you and Merry Christmas 🎄🎁🫂🥂🎉
